בני המשפחות השכולות

Bereaved families

אכן גם אני מצר על עוגמת נפש

Indeed I too regret the distress

שנודעה לי בהגיעי כאן להר

Known to me as I come here to the mountain,

יחד עם אישי המדינה

Together with people of the state,

על מנת לחלוק כבוד אחרון ליקיריכם

To pay their last respects to your loved ones.

אתם יושבים בין הקברים

You sit among the graves,

איש לא הבחין אז ואסור

No one differentiated then and it is forbidden

שנבחין היום בין שמאל וימין

That we should distinguish today between left and right

בין חלק זה של העם לחלק אחר –

Between this part of the people and another part

כולם היו לוחמים של עם ישראל

All of them were fighters of Israel.

זאת הדרך הנכונה לכבד את זכרם

This is the right way to honor their memory.

אני מכיר את גודל כאבכם

I know your great pain.

אין פצע שישווה לו

There is no would that can compare.

יקיריכם שהיו גם יקירינו

Your loved ones who were also our loved ones

נפלו בשליחות האומה

Fell on behalf of the nation,

למען שמירת ביטחונה של מדינת ישראל

In order to preserve Israel’s security.

 כולנו מצדיעים לגבורתם

We all salute their courage,

 כולנו מרכינים ראש לזכרם

We all bow our  heads to remember them.

אכן צדק הנשיא כשאמר שהרבה מאד

Indeed the president was right when he said that many

 דברים השתנו ב-60 השנים שעברו

Things have changed in the 60 years that have passed

מאז פעולות התגמול ומבצע קדש

Since the retaliations and Sinai Campaign.

ואף על פי כן

Nevertheless,

יש דברים שלעולם לא משתנים

Some things never change,

תעצומות הרוח

Strength of spirit,

ההתלכדות הפנימית

internal cohesion,

ההתגייסות לטובת האחר

mobilization in favor of other

הערבות ההדדית ברגעי מבחן מכריעים

mutual decisive at critical moments.

אנחנו ראינו זאת בימים האחרונים

We saw this in recent days

אל מול התבערה הטבעית וגם

In the face of natural and

אל מול התבערה הלא טבעית

In the face of the unnatural and incendiary-

ההצתות

Arson

ואני גאה ביכולת של אזרחי ישראל

And I am proud of the ability of the citizens of Israel

לעמוד יחד נחושים להציל חיים

Who are determined to stand together to save lives

נחושים לשמור על ארצנו

Determined to protect our country.

את הבתים שנשרפו - נקים מחדש

The houses that were burned, we will erect again.

את היערות שהוצתו ביד זדונית –

The forests that were maliciously set on fire-

נשקם

?

במקום כל עץ שהפך שחור –

 In every place of a tree turned black

ילבלבו עשרה עצים ירוקים

Ten green trees will blossom

כך עשו קודמינו מאז הקמת

Such as our predecessors did since the founding

הציוני וכך נעשה אנחנו –  המפעל

Of the Zionist enterprise and Such we will do

נשתול, נבנה, נעמיק שורש

We’ll plant, rebuild, deepen roots.

כושר העמידה הזה של עם איתן

This resilience of a strong

ומאוחד התגלה במלוא עוצמתו

And united people was emerged in full force

 בימי המערכה בסיני

During the Sinai campaign.

 אני מזכיר לכם שהיינו שמונה שנים בלבד  

I remind you that we were only eight years

אחרי מלחמת העצמאות

After the war of independence,

 ואויבינו איימו עלינו בסיבוב שני

And our enemies threatened us round two.

 פעולות הטרור של המסתננים

Terrorist activities of infiltrators

 והפדאיון הפילו חללים

And fadayeen took their toll.

 טבעת החנק הלכה והתהדקה סביבנו

The noose tightened around us gradually,

 וכעם חפץ חיים ידענו

And as a people desiring life

 שמוטל עלינו לפרוץ אותה     

It was laid on us the task of breaking it.

              

ביום פקודה

On the day of the order,

כשהכוחות שעטו לעומק סיני

When the forces dashed deep into Sinai

העורף השתתף במאמץ הכללי

The front took part in the general effort

 אני זוכר את זה כי הייתי אז ילד בן שבע

I remember it because I was seven years old,

וגם אני, כמו כל חבריי

And I too, like my friends,

עזרתי להגיף את התריסים בבית בירושלים

I helped close the shutters in Jerusalem.

לא ידענו אם יהיו הפצצות

We didn’t know if there would be bombings

של חיל האוויר המצרי

By the Egyptian Air Force,

לכן הדבקנו ניירות לחלונות

So we stuck papers in the windows,

 עמעמנו את האורות מחשש

Dimmed the lights for fear

לאותה הפצצה

Of those bombings

הייתי תלמיד צעיר בבית הספר

I was a young student in the school,

 "הדרום", לא רחוק מכאן

“The South,” not far from here

ועברנו ללמוד בכיתה שהייתה

And we moved to study in the classroom that was

מתחת לגרם המדרגות

Below a flight of stairs.

בערבים התכנסנו סביב הרדיו

In the evenings we would gather around the radio,

צמאים לכל פיסת מידע

Hungry for any piece of information,

הקשבנו לדיווחי "קול ישראל" מירושלים

We listened to the reports of “Voice of Israel” from Jerusalem.

אני זוכר את הקריינים ואת הקרייניות עכשיו

I remember the announcers now

כאילו דיברו לפני רגע

As if they spoke a moment ago,

 והם היו מדווחים על מהלכי הקרבות

And they were reporting on the battles.

אחרי כמה ימים, כשבוע, המבצע הסתיים

After a few days, a week or so, the operation ended.

אני זוכר את אבא של משפחה בשכונה שלנו

I remember the father of a family in our neighborhood,

 משפחת רפאלי

The Raphaels,

 אני זוכר את אבא של יגאל ואילנה מגיע

I remember the father of Igal and liana arriving

משירות מילואים מהדרום הרחוק

From reserve duty from far in the South,

 בג'יפ, כולו מאובק, והוא הביא לנו שוקולד

In a jeep, all dusty, and he brought us chocolate.

 הוא אמר לנו

He told us:

תאכלו ילדים, שוקולד

Children, eat chocolate.

 קניתי את זה באל-עריש

I bought it in El Arish.

אני זוכר שהוא הדגיש את המלה "קניתי"

I remember he emphasized the word, “bought.”

 הייתה תחושה של ניצחון גדול

There was a great feeling of a great victory,

 שכולם היו שותפים לו

That everyone shared.

- מאחרוני הילדים ועד ראשוני המנהיגים

From the last child to the first of the leaders.

ולימים יצא לי לפגוש לוחמים שצנחו במתלה

And later I met paratroopers

 ועוד רבים מכוחות החי"ר והשריון והאוויר

And many more infantry and armor and air,

נדמה לי גם הים, כל אחד מהם תרם

I think even the sea, all of them which

להישג המבצעי המזהיר

Contributed to the achievement of the operation,

 כי פעולת המנע הזאת ביססה

Because this preventative action established

את כושר ההרתעה של ישראל

Israel’s deterrence.

 היא לימדה שההצלחה במלחמת

It taught that success in the war

 השחרור לא הייתה מקרית

Of independence was not accidental,

היא לא הייתה חד-פעמית.

It was not a one-time occasion.

 היה פה משהו חזק, משהו איתן

There was there something strong, something solid,

 והוכחנו למי שמאיים להשמיד אותנו שזהו

And it proved to those who threatened to destroy us that

 ביתנו ונגן עליו ככל שנידרש

This is our home and we have everything we need against them

כולל בפעולות יזומות,

Including proactive actions

 פעולה יזומה גדולה

Great proactive actions,

ואין ספק שמבצע קדש

And there is no doubt the Sinai Campaign

סייע לתת לנו

has helped to give us

אחת-עשרה שנים של שקט יחסי

Eleven years of relative quiet,

כי תופעת ההסתננות דעכה אחריו

Because afterwards the infiltration phenomenon quieted,

 חופש השיט בים סוף הובטח

Freedom of navigation in the Red Sea was sucured.

הרבה דברים הושגו

Many things were achieved,

אבל דבר אחד לא היה לנו אז

But one thing we did not have then,

- לא הייתה לנו אז את תמיכתה

We did not have the support

של ארצות הברית.

of the United States.

 וכיוון שלא הייתה תמיכה זאת

And because there wasn’t that support,

 ראש הממשלה בן-גוריון נאלץ

Prime Minister Ben Gurion was forced

 בתכתיב אמריקני-רוסי

By the dictates of US/Russia,

לסגת מחצי האי סיני מהר מאוד

T o speedily withdraw from the Sinai peninsula

 ובכן, במגוון הדברים שהשתנו מאז

Well, a variety of things have changed since then,

 והשתנו הרבה דברים

And many things have changed.

 - בקליטת המיליונים של העולים

The absorption of millions of immigrants,

בבניית הכלכלה שלנו,

The building of our economy,

 בפתיחת הכלכלה

The opening of the economy,

 בביסוס הטכנולוגיה

With the consolidation of technology,

בהתעצמות אדירה של צה"ל

The tremendous buildup of the IDF,

 ושל המוסד ושל השב"כ

Of Mossad and Shin Bet,

 בהתעצמות הכבירה של מדינת ישראל

The enormous buildup of the state of Israel

- השתנו הרבה מאוד דברים והתעצמנו

Many things have changed and strengthened

 מבחינה צבאית וביטחונית

With regards to our military and security,

אבל התעצמנו גם מבחינה מדינית

But strengthening also with regards to Statesmanship,

 ובייחוד במישור היחסים

Especially with regard to the level of relations

עם ארצות הברית

With the United States.

אני רוצה להגיד לכם

I want to tell you,

אנחנו נמצאים כרגע בפריחה בינלאומית אדירה

We are now in the midst of a great international blooming

 אדירה, עם המעצמות הגדולות בעולם

Tremendous, with the major powers in the world,

עם מדינות אסיה,

With countries in Asia,

עם מדינות אפריקה

With countries in Africa,

עם מדינות אמריקה הלטינית

With Latin American countries,

אבל אבן הראשה של מערכות היחסים שלנו

But the keystone of our relationships

זו הברית האיתנה עם ארצות הברית,

Is the steadfast alliance with the United States,

שנשענת בראש ובראשונה על התמיכה

Which relies primarily on the

ההולכת וגוברת של העם האמריקני,

growing support of the American people,

של הציבור האמריקני במדינת ישראל,

The American public in the state of Israel

ואנחנו מלאי הערכה

And we are appreciative

 ומלאי תודה על התמיכה הזאת

And grateful for this support.

אני אף פעם לא שוכח את זה,

I’ll never forget it,

ולכן אני גם מוקיר ומעריך את ההסכם

And so I also recognize and appreciate the agreement

שעשינו לאחרונה

Made recently

עם נשיא ארצות הברית.

with the President of the United States.

 ברק אובמה ואנוכי חתמנו על מזכר תמיכה

Barack Obama and I have signed a memorandum in support

של סיוע ביטחוני למדינת ישראל,

Of security and aid to Israel,

ואני מצפה שגם בשלהי כהונתו הנשיא אובמה

And I expect that at the end of his term, President Obama

יעמוד באמירתו מ-2010,

Will live up to his statement in 2010,

שהדרך להשגת שלום איננה עוברת דרך

That the way to achieve peace is not passing

 החלטות במועצת הביטחון,

Through decisions of the Security Council,

אלא במשא ומתן ישר עם הפלסטינים,

But direct negotiations with the Palestinians

 כפי שהייתה עמדת ארצות הברית

As was the position of the United States

במהלך השנים

over the previous years.

אני הרמתי טלפון לפני ימים אחדים

I picked up the phone a few days ago

לאבו מאזן ואמרתי לו:

To Abbas and told him:

זה הדבר הנכון לעשות ואני מעריך את זה

This is the right thing to do and I appreciate it.

 בוא לא נדליק שריפות,

Let’s not light a fire,

בוא נכבה אותן ובוא נצעד יחד לשלום".

Let’s shut down and let us take them together for peace.

 אבל אני יודע ואתם יודעים שאת השלום

But I know and you know that the peace

משיגים קודם כל

Is achieved first of all

על ידי עוצמתה של מדינת ישראל.

By the strength of the State of Israel.

 שלום עושים עם החזק –

Peace is made with strength-

החלש לא שורד באזורנו

The weak do not survive in our region.

שישה עשורים אחרי מבצע קדש,

Six decades after the Sinai campaign,

צה"ל ממשיך להיות צבא חזק ואיכותי.

The IDF continues to be a strong and quality army.

אנחנו משקיעים בהכשרת החיילים והמפקדים,

We invest in training soldiers and officers,

מציידים אותם במיטב הנשק והטכנולוגיה,

Equipping them with the best weapons and technology,

אבל מעל לכל ולפני הכל,

But above all and before all,

מטפחים את הרוח הלוחמת שחותרת לניצחון.

Cultivating the fighting spirit that seeks victory.

 רוח ההעזה והגבורה היא

The spirit of boldness and bravery is what

שהכריעה לטובתנו את מבצע קדש,

Overcame in our favor in the Suez Crisis,

והיא תעמוד לנו תמיד בעת צרה.

And it will stand with us always in times of trouble.

נזכור את בנינו

We will remember our sons

אמיצי הלב שנפלו במערכה,

the valiant fallen of the campaign,

ונעביר את מורשתם

And we will pass their heritage

מדור לדור

from generation to generation.

 יהי זכרם ברוך
